FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University’s Fischler School of Education and Human Services and its Hispanic Advisory Board recently held the 12th annual Cervantes Outstanding Educator Awards, which recognized 22 distinguished educators from public and private schools throughout Miami-Dade County for their contributions to the education of Hispanic students.

These awards were presented by NSU’s Education Provost and University Dean H. Wells Singleton, Ph.D., School Board Members, and the principals of the private high schools. More than 450 educators and community members attended the event.

Additionally, an NSU student pursuing an undergraduate degree in education was recognized as the recipient of the 2009 Hispanic Heritage Scholarship. The scholarships is valued at $10,000 and was presented to Tampa student Daisy Agueda by Jamie Manburg, Ed.D., Dean of Undergraduate Teacher Education for the Fischler School.

At the Oct. 15 awards ceremony, the recipient for the evening’s highest honor, the Cervantes Outstanding Educator Award, was also announced. Renowned educator Rosa Castro-Feinberg, Ph.D., was selected for her contributions to the education of Hispanic youth in Miami-Dade County and South Florida, as well as for her national advocacy on behalf of Hispanic students.

Twenty-one additional teachers from across Miami-Dade County were also recognized, including: Carmen Almirall, Carlos Artime, Barbara Behnke, Biatriz Brito, Adolfo Costa, Sister Katheryn Donze, Olga Figgueras, Eduardo Flor, Milagros Fornell, Xiamena Herrmann, Martin Karp, Robert LaVohn, Carmen Martin, Kerri Maysonet, Mary Mccullaggh, Maria del Carmen Naranjo, Rosa Maria Plasencia, Cristina Pouza, Maria Teresa Rojas, Carole Springer, and Rhonda Vangates.

Additionally, elementary, middle, and senior high students from public and private schools, who competed in an essay contest, were recognized during the awards ceremony, including: Meagan A. Martínez, Patricia Velazco, Alexandra Brookins, Crystal Paz, Daniel Pérez, Karina Adriazol, Giuliana Toscani, Gilberto Quintana, and Germán Etcheverry.

The members of the Fischler School’s Hispanic Advisory Board include: Rosi Mari Álvarez, Carmen B. Marinelli, Melina E. Castillo Monroy, Pedro Mena, María Dreyfus de Ulvert, Isabel Méndez, Benito Díaz, Joe I. Rasco, Marjorie Figueira, Lorenzo J. Rodríguez, Cesar A. Guerrero, Lourdes C. Rovira, Ambassador Carmenza Jaramillo, Gil Rubertê, Maggie Alemán Manrara, and Nereida I. Santa Cruz. The chair of the advisory board is Armando Rodríguez.
