Dr. Donald Meichenbaum to Deliver Keynote Address at NSU Commencement Ceremony, June 16

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Abraham S. Fischler School of Education and Center for Psychological Studies are proud to welcome Donald Meichenbaum, Ph.D., as the 2013 keynote speaker for the schools’ commencement ceremony, which will be held at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, FL on Sunday, June 16, 2013 at 4:00 p.m.

Meichenbaum’s remarks to the new graduates will be focused on the theme “Roadmap to Resilience: Building Blocks for the Future.”

The university expects more than 850 graduates to attend this year’s commencement ceremony with their family and friends. For the first year, NSU’s commencement ceremonies are being streamed via a live webcast. Space is limited for the webcast, please RSVP at: www.nova.edu/commencement

Donald Meichenbaum, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and Distinguished Professor Emeritus from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada where he taught and conducted research for over 35 years. Seventeen years ago he took early retirement to become Research Director of the Melissa Institute for Violence Prevention in Miami. He is one of the founders of a set of therapeutic procedures called Cognitive Behavior Therapy. In a survey of clinicians, Dr. Meichenbaum was voted “one of the ten most influential psychotherapists of the 20th century.”

Dr Meichenbaum was born in Bronx, New York where he graduated in 1962 from City College of New York. He attended the University of Illinois in Champaign, Illinois where he received a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. He was the Honorary President of the Canadian Psychological Association, and he is a member of the Royal Society of Canada and a Fellow of the American Psychological Association.

Dr. Meichenbaum has been married for 50 years and has four children and six grandchildren. He loves to play tennis, travel, and help others, most recently returning service members.

He has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Clinical Division of the American Psychological Association. He has presented in all 50 U.S. states and internationally. He has published extensively and his most recent book is entitled “Roadmap to Resilience.”
