Celebrate National Library Week At Alvin Sherman Library April 13-19
FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – Join Nova Southeastern University and the Alvin Sherman Library, Research and Information Technology Center in celebrating the 50th anniversary of National Library Week April 13 -19. Mark your calendars for the following:
Tuesday April 15:
- From 3:30-4:30p.m., children ages 4-7 can enjoy stories, songs, and crafts in honor of National Library Week!
- If you’re looking for an evening full of stories, songs, dances, and crafts; from 7-7:30p.m., children of all ages with a caregiver can take part in an exciting collection of library themed activities in both English and Spanish.
- If you’re interested in learning how to enhance your child’s narrative skills and enable him or her to become excited about reading, then parents and caregivers of young children can enroll in Family Literacy University from 7:30-7:45p.m. Mexican cookies and tropical soft drinks will be served!
- If you are an adult looking to learn impressive skills concerning computers, from 7-8 p.m. you can take part in a computer camp that will inform first-time users of Microsoft Word how to select the type, style, or font size you want, change the margins, save a document and print the final result.
Wednesday April 16:
- Children between the ages of 3 and 5 with a caregiver, can enjoy an entertaining morning of Story Time Fun, from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. Activities include stories, songs, crafts, and fun activities with the theme: L is for Library!
- Parents and Caregivers of children ages 3-5: from 11-11:15a.m. you can join Family Literacy University and enhance your child’s narrative skills, learn proven techniques to help your child become a reader. This session is from 11:00 to 11:15 a.m. Free refreshments!
- From 11:15–11:30 a.m.children ages 3 to 5 can take part in a Little Learners Lab where you can explore fun, educational websites in a relaxed, one-on-one environment.
Thursday April 17:
- From 10:30-11a.m., infants and toddlers 0-36 months can dance, sing, and learn about friendship during story time featuring “Ridiculous Rhyme” Mother Goose stories and songs! Featured books include The Seals on the Bus by Lenny Hort and Five Little Monkeys Sitting in a Tree by Eileen Christelow.
- Parents and caregivers of children 0-36 months, we’ve got a great activity for you! From 11-11:30a.m., you can attend Family Literacy University and learn what you can do to help infants and toddlers become aware of, comfortable, and excited about books and language!
- Looking to learn impressive skills concerning computers? From 7-8 p.m. a computer camp for first-time adult users of Microsoft Publisher will teach the basics of designing brochures, flyers, calendars, and more!
Saturday April 19:
- Do you live to crochet? Then we have the activity for you! From 2-4p.m. children ages 9 and up can experience “crochet madness” and learn to or just enjoy crocheting while meeting new and interesting people. (Don’t forget to bring a crochet hook and yarn!)
First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country.
The Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology is located at 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr. Blvd. and is a unique joint-use facility serving the residents of Broward County as well as NSU students, faculty, and staff members. Thanks to an agreement between the Broward County Board of County Commissioners and NSU, the Alvin Sherman Library offers traditional public library services as well as the full academic resources of one of the nation’s largest private universities. Library hours are 7:30 a.m. – 11 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 7:30 a.m. – 9 p.m. Friday; 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. Saturday; and 11a.m. – 11:30 p.m. Sunday.
