CDC Executive to Speak at NSU Commencement

Ursula Bauer, Ph.D, M.P.H., director of the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. — Ursula Bauer, Ph.D, M.P.H., director of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, will be the keynote speaker at a commencement ceremony at Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Health Professions Division on Sunday, May 19.

The ceremony, where 703 Health Professions Division (HPD) students will receive their degrees, will be held at 1 p.m. at the BB&T Center in Sunrise.  HPD houses the colleges of dental medicine, optometry, osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, medical sciences, nursing and heath care sciences.

HPD students and faculty conduct cutting-edge research in human stem cells, cancer, heart disease, AIDS/HIV and neuro-immune disorders, including chronic fatigue syndrome.

In her role Dr. Bauer, sets the strategic direction for the center’s “Winnable Battles” of tobacco use prevention, improved nutrition and physical activity and prevention of teen and unintended pregnancy, as well as key priorities related to the leading causes of death.

The National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion has an annual budget of about $1 billion and 1,300 staff dedicated to preventing chronic diseases and promoting health across the life span, in key settings, and with attention to the primary chronic disease risk factors.

Before becoming director of this Center, Dr. Bauer was director of the Division of Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention in the New York State Department of Health.  Her entire public health career has been in state health services in Louisiana, Florida and New York.

Dr. Bauer received her Ph.D. in epidemiology from Yale University; her M.P.H. in family health from Columbia University; and a master’s degree in political science from Rutgers University.
