Average life-time expenditures for children with ASD are $2.3 million for those with co-occurring intellectual disability. Direct medical costs – outpatient care, home care, pharmacy bills – contribute to those expenses, but non-medical costs, such as intervention services, special education, child care and residential placements, and care for adults, account for the highest proportion of expenses.
