Alan B. Levan to Serve as Chairman of NSU’s Board of Trustees
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University (NSU) welcomes Alan B. Levan as chairman of its Board of Trustees. Mr. Levan has served on the university’s board for 18 years; he was nominated and voted on by the board to serve as its chairman for an initial three-year term. Mr. Levan takes on this responsibility following the leadership of Ron Assaf, co-founder of Sensormatic Electronics, who is stepping down as chairman after 13 years, but will remain on the board.
“I am honored to continue my commitment to NSU by serving as chairman of the board of trustees,” said Mr. Levan. “I look forward to collaborating with leaders across the university and community to build upon the success of those who have served before me.”
Mr. Levan is chairman and CEO of BBX Capital Corporation (NYSE: BBX) and Chairman of Bluegreen Vacations Corporation (NYSE: BXG). Under his leadership, BBX has invested in and acquired businesses in banking, investment banking, real estate, retail brokerage, timeshares and other sectors. Mr. Levan has also served as chairman and CEO of Levitt Corporation (NYSE: LEV) and BankAtlantic (NYSE: BBX). He has also served as a director of Benihana, Inc. (NASDAQ: BNHN).
“As a skilled business leader and experienced board member, Alan has been a great asset to NSU for many years,” said NSU President Dr. George L. Hanbury. “Alan has a deep understanding of the university, and combined with his extensive business knowledge, I am confident that he will effectively lead our board of trustees.”
In his role as chairman of NSU’s board of trustees, Mr. Levan will lead the trustees to help ensure the fulfillment of the university’s mission and Vision 2020. Through institutional fundraising, strategic planning and ensuring sensible management, in conjunction with Dr. Hanbury, the board will preserve NSU’s future, and enable it to continue innovating.
In addition to his role as chairman of NSU’s board of trustees, Mr. Levan serves as chairman of the finance committee, co-founder and co-chairman of the Susie and Alan B. Levan NSU Ambassadors Board and is President of NSU’s Fellows Society. He has served on the board since 2002.
Mr. Levan is highly active in the community. In addition to the numerous roles he holds at NSU, he is also the founder and chairman of the BBX Capital Foundation, formerly BankAtlantic Foundation, which has contributed more than $15 million to the South Florida community. Mr. Levan has generously provided major philanthropic support to not only NSU but to other organizations as well. In 2018, Mr. Levan and his wife, Susie Levan, were named Philanthropists of the Year for Broward County by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), Fort Lauderdale/Broward Chapter. Mr. Levan has received Habitat for Humanity’s Spirit of Humanity Award, NSU’s Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame Award, Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce’s Cutting Edge Award, Sun-Sentinel’s Excalibur Business Leader of the Year Award, Florida Atlantic University’s College of Business Business Leader of the Year award and Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year award for Florida.
