8th Annual Free Summer of Fun Kicks Off With Creativity Carnival at Alvin Sherman Library – Sat. June 6

Experience 8 weeks of exciting activities for children, families, tweens, teens and adults at Nova Southeastern University’s Library

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – Have a blast this summer without spending a dime by making the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Technology Center at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) your one-stop-shop for fun activities for all ages. Free programming for youth, teens and adults will take place June 6 through Aug. 1 at the Alvin Sherman Library, 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr. Blvd. in Davie.

The festivities start with the Summer Reading Kick-off Creativity Carnival on Saturday, June 6 from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. At the carnival, participants can sign up for the summer reading program to win prizes for reading all summer long, and see Jiggleman perform a comedy-acrobatic show at 2:30 p.m. The carnival will also feature games, stilt walkers, cotton candy, sno-cones, temporary tattoo art, hair-painting and more.

The carnival is also a great time to learn about the many free summer activities being offered, which range from Totally Tweens Creative Journaling, to the story telling Shermanettes who are back by popular demand, to a Computer Camp to teach adults how to connect online using tools such as Facebook, YouTube and Flickr.

Ongoing family-oriented activities throughout the summer include:

  • Movies & Popcorn Every Tuesday: All ages with caregiver, 2 to 3:30 p.m. Enjoy an afternoon of movies and popcorn at the library. Call 954-262-5477 weekly for movie details.
  • Lunch Bunch Every Wednesday: Ages 7 and up, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Bring and eat your lunch while listening to stories and music, creating crafts, playing games and more.
  • Totally Tweens Every Wednesday: Ages 9-12, 2 to 3 p.m. Read and get creative with activities, crafts and games just for tweens.
  • Silly Stories with The Shermanettes Every Thursday: All ages with caregiver, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Explore the world of art, music, literature and puppetry with silly stories and songs.

In addition to the June 6 Creativity Carnival, special family-oriented activities include:

  • Sat. June 13 – Fantasy Theatre Factory: All ages with caregiver, 2 to 3 p.m. Fantasy Theatre Factory presents a hilarious retelling of Cinderella, a “Fractured Fairy Tale.”
  • Sat. June 20 – Family Fun & Games: All ages with caregiver, 2 to 3 p.m. Join us for board games, puzzles and more at this fun family program.
  • Sun. June 21 – Storyteller Melinda Munger: All ages with caregiver, 2 to 3 p.m. Hear zany stories from a beloved local storyteller.
  • Wed. June 24 – Totally Tweens Creative Journaling: Ages 9-12, 2 to 3 p.m. or 3 to 4 p.m. Unleash your inner artist with creative journaling. Call 954-262-5477 to register starting June 7.
  • Sat. June 27 – Mr. Brian and the Boppets: All ages with caregiver, 2 to 3 p.m. Meet Mr. Brian and his Boppets at this interactive musical puppet show.
  • Sat. July 11 – Clowning Around with Suzy Hammer: All ages with caregiver, 2 to 3 p.m. Suzy Hammer, entertainer extraordinaire, delights audiences with silly songs, games and stories.
  • Sat. July 18 – Family Fun & Games: All ages with caregiver, 2 to 3 p.m. Join us for board games, puzzles and more at this fun family program.
  • Sat. July 25 – Bob Nathanson’s Puppets to Go: All ages with caregiver, 2 to 3 p.m. Professional puppeteer Bob Nathanson brings puppets to life with music, stories and a behind-the-scenes look at the world of puppetry.
  • Sat. Aug. 1 – Musician Darrell House: All ages with caregiver, 2 to 3 p.m. End the summer with a sweet treat and our favorite songs by children’s musician Darrell House.

While at the library, don’t forget to avoid rental fees by stocking up on free check outs of the latest Blu-Rays, DVDs and video games. Teens can also earn service hours by volunteering over the summer. For more information, please visit www.nova.edu/library/summer or call 954-262-5477.
