Mary Friel, NSU’s director of undergraduate recruitment, lost 55 pounds in 16 weeks to earn the title of NSU’s Biggest Loser.

Mary Friel, the director of undergraduate recruitment at NSU, was crowned the individual winner of NSU’s Biggest Loser program at a ceremony held May 8 at the Sheraton Suites in Plantation. Friel lost 55 pounds – 24.9 percent of her weight – to edge Andrew Dunne, assistant director of network and computing for the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, who lost 56 pounds (21.2 percent of his weight).

NSU’s Biggest Loser program – based on the hit TV show on NBC – saw its 14 contestants lose a total of 365 pounds. The rigorous 16-week program divided employees and students at NSU into three teams and they participated in team and individual workouts with trainers. Contestants also had regular meetings with a nutritionist and kept journals of their daily nutrition and exercise.

Other winners announced at the closing ceremony were:

Individual runners-up (from each team):
Andrew Dunne (Lean Green Machines) – 21.2 percent body weight lost (56 pounds)
Mehul Rana (Golden Champs) – 11.6 percent body weight lost (36 pounds)
Kevin Keegan (Red Fireballs) – 7.9 percent body weight lost (17 pounds)

Most improved blood pressure and/or cholesterol: Rhoda Levine (45-point drop in cholesterol)

Most total inches lost: Erika Malone (lost 14.5 total inches from abdomen, hips and waist)

Highest percentage of body fat lost: David Bloyd (7.2 percent decrease)
