Why Fort Lauderdale Landed Among Top 10 U.S. Cities for Art Lovers
It’s official! Fort Lauderdale is for art lovers.
According to a recent national survey conducted by the real estate website Apartmentguide and cited by artnet.com, Fort Lauderdale ranked as one of the top 10 cities for art lovers (a first for this city). The survey, which compared city population to the number of art-related businesses, such as galleries, museums and art supply stores, singled out Fort Lauderdale’s vibrant arts community.
Acclaimed productions at Broward Center for the Performing Arts, including the recent engagement of Hamilton and the upcoming Florida premiere of the opera Frida! by the Florida Grand Opera, NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale’s critically acclaimed exhibitions, the newly opened outdoor Science Park at the Museum of Discovery and Science, and the monthly art happenings at FAT Village, are just a few of the wide array of local cultural offerings enriching the lives of residents and tourists of Greater Fort Lauderdale.

Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean J. Trantalis recently noted partnering with NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale “advances our community’s arts and cultural opportunities, celebrates our diversity, encourages creativity and innovation, and enhances the character and identity of our City.”
The arts are an industry and significant economic driver in Broward County. According to the Arts & Economic Prosperity 5 report released by Broward Cultural Division and the national nonprofit organization Americans for the Arts in June 2017, arts and culture in Broward County generated $414 million in economic impact in fiscal year 2015. That spending supported 11,078 full-time jobs and produced $40.1 million in local and state tax revenue.
Local cultural institutions are dedicated to reaching deep into the community and providing access to all. At NSU Art Museum, Fort Lauderdale residents can now enjoy free admission on the last Sunday of every month (the next one is February 24) in addition to our Free First Thursdays Starry Nights. Children under 12 always receive free admission to the museum. The museum provides free field trips and art workshops for over 3,000 area students annually and brings its lectures and art workshops to locations throughout Greater Fort Lauderdale.
Museum visitors can catch our current exhibition of French impressionist Renoir’s influence on American artist William Glackens, and take pride in the diverse selection of works from our noted permanent collection that are also now on view. Additionally, through March 3, art lovers can see the museum’s collection of Haitian art at the Alvin Sherman Library at Nova Southeastern University’s Davie campus. Great art is closer than ever in Greater Fort Lauderdale.
