This Week in Shark Athletics

Women’s Basketball
The women’s basketball team will begin the Sunshine State Conference tournament in Melbourne, Fla. from March 2-6 as the No. 6 seed. Since NSU entered the Sunshine State Conference in 2004, the NSU women’s basketball team is 6-4 all-time in the SSC tournament. Tip times are to be announced.

Men’s Basketball
The men’s basketball team will begin the Sunshine State Conference tournament in Melbourne, Fla. from March 2-6. Since NSU entered the conference in 2004, the NSU men’s basketball team is 3-6 all-time in the SSC tournament. Tip times are to be announced.

Men’s Golf
NSU’s men’s golf team will travel to Ponce, Puerto Rico for the Caribbean Classic hosted by St. John’s University from March 6-9. The Sharks have never travelled to Puerto Rico for a tournament and are playing in St. John’s tournament for the first time in the history of the program.

Women’s Golf
The women’s golf team will travel to Winter Springs, Fla. for the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational hosted by Rollins College. The Sharks claimed the crown last season with a 36-over par total of 900 over the three day event. Sandra Changkija ran away with the event firing three rounds under par (70, 69, 70) for a seven-under par score of 209, winning the tournament by eight strokes.

Women’s Tennis
NSU’s women’s tennis team will play five matches this week, the most in a single week all year. NSU will host Division I Pittsburgh at the NSU Tennis Complex on March 6 at 10 a.m. NSU owns a perfect, 3-0, record against Pittsburgh. In these teams’ last meeting on March 10, 2009, the Sharks defeated the Panthers, 6-3, at the NSU Tennis Complex. The next day, March 7, NSU will begin a four dual match series in Orlando, Fla. from March 7-12. The Sharks will meet St. John’s on March 7 at 12:30 p.m. NSU will get one day off before clashing with Great Lakes Valley Conference opponent Southern Indiana at 10 a.m. on March 9.  On Friday, March 11, the Sharks will face their second Division I opponent in Radford University before turning around on March 12 to play Southeastern New Hampshire at 10 a.m.

Softball
The softball team will travel to Tampa to compete in a neutral game against UNC-Pembroke for a doubleheader on March 11 beginning at 6 p.m. The Sharks own a 2-1 all-time record against the Braves. NSU last met UNC-Pembroke in the Barry/Nova Invitational on February 6, 2009 where the Sharks won convincingly, 9-1. The next day, March 12, the Sharks will begin conference play at Tampa beginning at 6 p.m.  The Spartans edge the Sharks in the all-time series, 13-12, but the Sharks won the series last year, 2-1, at the AD Griffin Sports Complex.

Baseball
NSU’s baseball team will travel to Boynton Beach, Fla. to compete in a neutral game against Chestnut Hill College on March 6 at 12 p.m. This will pose as the first meeting between the Sharks and Griffins on the diamond. NSU will take five days off before hosting a three game conference series against the University of Tampa on March 11-12. The Spartans hold a 14-3 all-time edge against the Sharks. NSU fell to Tampa, 14-3, on March 14, 2010 in Tampa, Fla.

Men’s and Women’s Track and Field
The men’s and women’s track and field teams will compete in the FAU Invitational on March 12. This is the first time FAU has hosted this meet on their own while in previous years they have teamed up with Florida International University to help host the meet.

Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving
NSU’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will be heading to San Antonio, Texas for the NCAA National Championship swim meet on March 9-12. The Sharks, who qualified for multiple individuals in the meet, will compete for four days in the national tournament.
