Valentine’s Day Didn’t Quite Work Out as You Had Planned? Don’t Worry – Relationship Check-Ups are Available to Help!

FORT LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla.– February 17, 2014 –

Did Valentine’s Day not go as you had hoped? Having some trouble with your significant other, but can’t seem to figure out why? Happy with your relationship, but feel that it can become even better?

Well, don’t fret – Nova Southeastern University (NSU) is here to help!

NSU’s Brief Therapy Institute (BTI) is currently conducting free “Relationship Check-Ups” each Tuesday from 3 – 5 p.m. through the end of April 2014. The Brief Therapy Institute (BTI) is an affordable counseling agency staffed with graduate interns and faculty from the graduate Marriage and Family Therapy program at NSU’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS.) These one-hour, single therapy sessions are being supervised by John Miller, Ph.D.

“These single sessions provide the chance for you take an inventory of your relationships and see what’s working and what needs to be tweaked,” Miller said.  “It can help start the process to mend a troubled relationship or take good ones to the next level.”

Miller said that studies show that the majority of couples will wait an average of six years in an unhappy relationship before reaching out to get help. Unfortunately, by then it’s often difficult to make changes that would have been easier earlier on in the relationship.

The Relationship Check-Up is a one-hour, private therapy consultation designed to be a friendly and convenient way to help individuals and couples identify strengths, needs, areas for growth and change. These sessions are a great way for people to learn what therapy is all about as it’s not just for people with problems, but also for people who have relationship questions or want to celebrate the strengths in their relationship.

“For some people the thought of talking to a therapist might seem intimidating,” Miller said. “This is meant to be a hassle-free way to consult with a therapist and, hopefully, benefit from the experience. People get ‘check-ups’ with professionals about their health, finances and careers – why not do the same for your relationship?”

For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call the Brief Therapy Institute at 954-262-3030. For information about the Relationship Check-up project, contact John K. Miller, Ph.D., at 954-262-0920 or via email (jm2790@nova.edu).
