Upcoming Faculty Lecture to Explore Hollywood’s Depiction of Caribbean Folklore, Nov. 1

Andrea Shaw, Ph.D.

Is Hollywood accurate in its portrayal of pirates and zombies wreaking havoc in the Caribbean? Find out during the next Faculty Lecture Series talk, hosted by the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences and presented by Andrea Shaw, M.F.A., Ph.D., associate professor and assistant director of the college’s Division of Humanities.

The lecture, titled “‘Zombies and Pirates, Take One’: Hollywood’s Ghostly Imaginings of the Caribbean,” will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 1, from noon to 1:00 p.m., in the Alvin Sherman Library, Second Floor Gallery.

Shaw’s presentation will examine Hollywood’s portrayal of the supernatural Caribbean and ask how the truth about the region’s history collides or merges with Hollywood’s power and its desire to portray the Caribbean in certain ways. How do Western notions of Caribbean identity come to life (or to death) in these films?

The Faculty Lecture Series draws from the knowledge and expertise of more than 120 full-time faculty members within the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences. The series explores the faculty’s diverse areas of interest in the arts, humanities, social sciences, physical sciences, and biological sciences. These talks are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Jim Doan, Ph.D., at (954) 262-8207.
