Sharks Team Up to Help at Disabilities Expo

Nova Southeastern University was home to the 36th Annual Disabilities Expo on Saturday, Oct. 3 and Sunday, Oct. 4. The Expo organized this fun and special event with the ultimate purpose of informing families about available services, resources and products for anyone with a disability.

Sherrelle Jordan (Jr., Chandler, Arizona), a runner on the NSU Women’s Track and Field team, was one of many student-athletes that helped throughout the weekend.

“It was my first time working with disabled children and it was an eye-opening experience to know that they are capable of unlimited creativity and opportunities to meet their needs,” she said.

The Sharks’ student-athletes assisted with the Inspirational Runway at the Don Taft University Center, the seventh annual Expo Wheelchair Basketball Tournament at the RecPlex basketball courts, the Fun Zone for kids at the Alvin Sherman Library and much more. Each of the student-athletes had the opportunity to interact with parents and children, including sophomore volleyball player Ashlyn Hill (Plano, Texas), who was also emotionally touched by her experience.

“It was inspiring seeing how much fun they were having and how much dedication these organizations have to their participants,” said Hill.

Some of the activities the students were most involved with were the Special Olympic tryouts, running the shot clocks and game clocks, attending information tables and other wheelchair basketball operations. The women’s basketball team had a hand in many of the tasks at the RecPlex, including Molly Blomer (Sr., West Chester, Ohio), a multi-time volunteer.

“It was an overall humbling and awesome experience for the NSU women’s basketball team to see the passion radiate from the players,” she said. “Even though we weren’t doing life changing things by running these clocks, we were all touched by these basketball players.”
