Sharks Capture SSC Women’s Golf Championship; Men’s Team Finished Third
The NSU women’s golf team captured the Sunshine State Conference Golf Championship by 21 strokes over Florida Southern. NSU, the defending NCAA Division II National Champions, had four golfers finish among the top five positions. The championship was hosted by NSU at Grande Oaks Golf Club in Ft. Lauderdale on Apr. 19-20.
The No. 2 nationally ranked Sharks shot a 294 in the opening round of play to take the lead. They followed up that effort with the lowest team score in the second round (298) to total 592 for the day. On the last day of the tournament, NSU fired a tournament-low round of 290 to take the title. NSU (294-298-290-882) finished with a 21-stroke edge over the runner-up, Florida Southern (309-299-295-903).
The Sharks’ Sandra Changkija rose from a tie for fourth place to first on the final day with a closing round of 69. The 69 was the lowest round of the tournament and the only under-par round of the championship. She concluded play at five-over par (72-77-69-218). For Changkija, the title marks her sixth victory in nine tournaments in the 2009-2010 season.
Teammate Maria Garcia-Austt came in second place (76-74-72-222), while NSU’s Abbey Gittings and Nicole Whitmore tied for fourth place along with Florida Southern’s Silvie Dittertova. Gittings shot 73-76-75-224 while Whitmore shot 77-73-74-224. Taylor Collins, a junior, tied for seventh place (73-75-77-225) to complete the scoring for the Sharks.
