Psychology Faculty Member Publishes Book on Evolutionary Psychology
Valerie G. Starratt, Ph.D., associate professor at NSU’s College of Psychology, has published a book examining the field of evolutionary psychology, a perspective that applies the principles of evolution by natural selection toward the understanding of human cognition and behavior.
Evolutionary Psychology: How Our Biology Affects What We Think and Do (ABC-CLIO Greenwood, available in May 2016) explores a wide range of topics, including everything from survival and mating to consciousness and religion.
“The purpose of this text is to introduce novice students of evolution and human behavior to major topics covered by evolutionary psychology and interesting minor tidbits demonstrating the breadth of what this field contributes to the understanding of our species’ history–as well as what that can tell us about who we are and why we are the way we are today,” Starratt wrote.
Starratt’s other published research focuses on the evolved psychology of human mating and sexual conflict, and the effects of activating evolved psychological mechanisms in modern contexts.
