Pride Bite: NSU’s Coalition Fights Human Trafficking

NSU recently celebrated the opening of its new headquarters for CREATE (Coalition for Research and Education Against Trafficking and Exploitation) at its Miramar campus. CREATE was founded by Brianna Black Kent, Ph.D., and Sandrine Gaillard-Kenney, Ed.D., from NSU’s College of Health Care Sciences in January 2015 and aims to equip all members of the community, including private citizens, educators, current and future health care professionals, and organizations with skills to identify victims of human trafficking resulting in increased reporting and referrals to appropriate health and social services.
Through CREATE, NSU partners with organizations such as the United States Attorney’s Office – Southern District of Florida; Kristi House Miami, Broward Health, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Community Foundation of Broward are joining together in the fight against human trafficking.
Florida ranks third in the nation for human trafficking, including sex trafficking, just behind California and New York. Broward County ranks first in the United States for buyers of commercial sex online.
NSU is focused on educating faculty, students and the community at large about human trafficking. In 2010, NSU started a program called projectHEAT (Health Educators Against Trafficking), which teaches people to recognize signs and symptoms of trafficked victims. NSU advocates for and implements curriculum change in the health professions. In this way future health care professionals can identify and assist victims appropriately. NSU established CREATE as an expansion of projectHEAT. CREATE is partially funded by a private gift administered by the Community Foundation of Broward.
