Orlando Sharks Take a Bite Out of Illiteracy

Did you know that only 48% of young children in the United States are read to on a daily basis?
Research shows that reading aloud to children helps with language development, literacy skills, and neurological development, to name a few. Even reading for as little as fifteen minutes a day can make a tremendous difference in a child’s lifelong learning skills. Because of this, the Orange County Public Schools have initiated the Guest Readers Week program, which encourages members of the community to spend time reading books to children in their classrooms.
It was a call that NSU Orlando employees were happy to answer. Doug Crowell and Derrick Osso, both assistant directors and Melanie Figueroa, academic advisor at NSU Orlando took turns visiting classrooms and reading various books to the children.
“Supporting the members of our community—all of the members of our community—is highly important,” said Figueroa. “There is nothing better than seeing a child’s face light up with happiness. All of our efforts were amply repaid with smiles!”
