Optometry Students to Display Research Posters, April 10

On April 10, Nova Southeastern University’s College of Optometry second-year students will show the results of their Community Outreach projects in a scientific poster session from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the Steele Auditorium, Terry Building of the NSU’s Health Professions Division.

As part of the second-year optometry curriculum on clinical prevention and population health, teams of students design, implement and evaluate community outreach projects that educate the public about the importance of a variety of visual health topics.  Community health education projects included reminding people of yearly dilated eye exams, wearing sunglasses, sports and occupational eye wear to protect their eyes, management of dry eyes, contact lens care, gaming and vision, nutrition for the eyes, children’s vision issues, and the leading causes of blindness such as diabetes, macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataracts.  The students will present their scientific posters representing their results and discussing their experiences at this session.

Organized by faculty member Janet Leasher, O.D., M.P.H., F.A.A.O., associate professor/director of community outreach, this service-learning activity complements the mission of the college and University for community engagement, and supports the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services national health initiative Healthy People 2020, which aims to encourage collaborations across community sectors, empower individuals towards making informed health decisions, and measure the impact of prevention activities.
