Off to a Good Start in 2014

Submitted by Marilyn Gordon EdD RD CSSD LDN

Nova Southeastern University

As we welcome in the New Year, let’s make a plan to take better care of ourselves. Often our good health is taken for granted until we are forced to deal with illness. Someone close to me recently said: “If I knew that I was going to live so very long, I would have taken better care of myself.” If you are in good health, everyone around you also benefits; your family and close friends, your coworkers, your employer, and the people that you are yet to meet. Being in good health is cost effective. Invest in preventive care and wellness now and you will save on medical care, hospitalization, and medications in the future.

The best way to begin is to schedule a “Wellness” physical with your physician. NSU has an Employee Health and Wellness Center.  https://nsunews.nova.edu/nsu-employee-health-wellness-center-open-april-8th/ Having a comprehensive physical can alert you to early signs that action needs to be taken to improve blood pressure, glucose levels, lipids, and bodyweight. The physician can evaluate and refer you to nutrition counseling services offered on Main Campus by a Registered Dietitian/Licensed Nutritionist if needed.

Your “Good Start in 2014” must include regular physical activity and stress management. We are fortunate to have access to the University Center Recreational Complex. http://www.rec.nova.edu/ Check out the new group exercise schedule which has been updated and expanded to offer a wide variety of classes to meet the needs of beginners to athletes. Now is the time to take advantage of the numerous opportunities available here at NSU to improve your health, wellness, and ultimately your happiness!
