NSU’s Science Alive and Sherman Library Team up to Bring Science to Life for Children
This summer, NSU’s Science Alive!, under the direction of Emily Schmitt Lavin, Ph.D., Interim Chair of the Biology Department in the Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography, presented a series of six science workshops over 3 weeks at the Alvin Sherman Library as part of the free Summer S.T.E.M. for Tweens and Science Kids programs hosted by Youth Services Librarians Kristina Knott and Katharine Labuda.
Science Alive! is a program in which NSU undergraduate and graduate students across multiple Colleges and disciplines work alongside alumni and teachers, in the spirit of One NSU, to help bring science to life for children of all ages.
By partnering with the Alvin Sherman Library for their series of free science programs for children ages 6-12, Dr. Schmitt Lavin and her team of volunteers were able to reach close to 100 children from within the surrounding community each week with hands-on science experiments and demonstrations. Topics explored this summer included hands-on activities to explore DNA (as part of the Bio-Rad Science Ambassadors Program) and the conduction of electricity (as part of the Scigirls Connect partner program).
