For the second consecutive year, NSU’s Model United Nations Team sponsored by the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences delivered an outstanding performance at the Southern Regional Model United Nations (SRMUN) conference in Charlotte, North Carolina, April 11–12, 2015.

Competing against more than 70 delegations comprised of hundreds of students from 35 colleges and universities, nine students from the Nova International Relations Association (NIRA) earned honors representing France and Palestine in six different committees.

Judged for their ability to handle hypothetical UN issues with diplomacy while remaining “in character” throughout the process, NIRA students received a “Distinguished Delegation” award for their overall representation of France––the second highest award in the conference.

In addition, NIRA exceeded previous conference performances by earning two “Outstanding Delegation” awards. Receiving top committee honors were political science majors Rehan Sherali and Vanessa DuBoulay in INTERPOL as well as political science and legal studies double major Andrew Jones and international studies major Carla Magno in Human Rights.

“In three years, this team has accomplished so much and I am so proud of what our group of graduating seniors has created in NIRA” said G. Nelson Bass III, J.D., Ph.D., assistant professor at the college and faculty adviser for NIRA.

The NIRA delegates include:
• Linea Cutter––France, Security Council
• Rehan Sherali––France, INTERPOL
• Vanessa DuBoulay––France, INTERPOL
• Andrew Jones––France, Human Rights Committee
• Carla Magno––France, Human Rights Committee
• Brandon Chow––Palestine, General Assembly
• Tommy Campbell––France, General Assembly
• Adam Markovich––France, African Development Bank
• Ana Maria Chamorro––Palestine, League of Arab States

SRMUN is the largest Model UN conference in the South and attracts a wide range of colleges and universities. Click here to view the list of schools NIRA competed against.

NIRA membership is open to all NSU undergraduate students interested in understanding global issues and willing to help raise awareness of the role diplomacy can play in solving pressing global issues. For more information, contact NIRA faculty adviser G. Nelson Bass III at (954) 262-8099.
