NSU’s Mailman Segal Center for Human Development (MSC) recently  announced that Avrilio Moumoutjis, Ph.D. has joined the Autism Institute as Director of the Baudhuin Preschool.

Dr. Moumoutjis, known as Dr. Avrilio, has more than 15 years of experience in early childhood education and in the education of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Most recently, he was a Special Education Program Specialist for the Mount Diablo Unified School District in Concord, California, a suburb of Oakland and San Francisco.

Dr. Avrilio’s academic training includes an undergraduate degree in psychology from Boston University, a master’s degree in special education from Dowling College and a doctoral degree in developmental psychology from Yeshiva University in New York City. He holds both an Education Specialist and Administrative Credential from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

“Dr. Avrilio will be an exciting addition to the highly professional and committed staff at the Baudhuin Preschool,” said Susan Kabot, Ed.D., CCC-SLP, Executive Director of MSC’s Autism Institute. ”We are confident that Baudhuin’s nationally-acclaimed model will continue to thrive under his leadership.”

The Mailman Segal Center’s Baudhuin Preschool, located on the main campus of Nova Southeastern University, is an internationally recognized, model program for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The program is offered in partnership with the School Board of Broward County. Collaborative opportunities with other NSU departments in academics, research, and clinical work enrich the educational experience for the children in the program and NSU’s  undergraduate and graduate students in numerous fields of study.

The Baudhuin Preschool program is built on the belief that each child is unique in ability, talent and learning style. The program supports the qualities and capabilities of each child. Designed for children three years of age through pre-kindergarten, this therapeutic program focuses on cognitive, social-emotional, adaptive, behavioral, motor, and communication skill development within a relationship-based environment.  The curriculum provides each child with choices, challenges, and opportunities that nurture feelings of competence, promote intellectual growth, and enable each child to achieve his or her potential.
