NSU’s first University-Wide Emergency Practice Drill a Huge Success

EmergencyDrill

After all of the preparation, planning and anticipation, NSU’s University-Wide Emergency Practice Drill on Thursday, March 17, 2016 went off without hitch. The drill was designed to replicate the LA County School incident when a credible threat of an explosive device was received via e-mail.  Below is a brief summary of our first university-wide evacuation.

The drill began at 10:15 am for University School and 11:00 am for the rest of the university. All of the U-School buildings were evacuated by 10:20 am and the information was communicated to Public Safety’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC). By 10:22 am, students and staff were allowed to enter the buildings.  By 10:25 am Public Safety verified that all of the Fire Alarm Systems at U-School had been re-set and with the exception of the Sonken Building, which completed re-entry at 10:30 am.

At 11:00 am, the second phase of the drill began. The fire alarm systems were activated, as well as the Emergency Notification system, which included Pop-Up notifications on computer screens, email, text and voice messages, federal speaker system, blue light phones, and digital marquees.

By 11:09 am, several regional campuses communicated their completed evacuation progress to the EOC, and at 11:10 am, all of the buildings on the Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus were evacuated.

At 11:14 am, the EOC received information that the Oceanographic campus had conducted their evacuation, accounted for everyone at the emergency assembly point, re-entered the facility and returned to normal operations.

At 11:26 am, the EOC was notified that all regional campuses had conducted their evacuation, accounted for everyone at the emergency assembly point and re-entered the facility. By 11:30 am, most of the buildings on the Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus were re-entered and at 12:03 pm, the entire University was back to normal operations. Students, faculty and staff received the “All Clear” from Public Safety and the EOC was shut down.

The University-Wide Emergency Practice Drill, which successfully evacuated 65 buildings and suites, illustrated the benefit of integrated emergency planning, and provided an opportunity to put these plans into action.
