As part of the celebration a total of nine elementary, middle, and high school students received awards for their participation in the “Cervantes Student Essay Awards.” Finally, three students currently enrolled in a master’s program through the International Teacher Education Program were awarded $2,000 scholarships.

“This year’s Cervantes Awards marks the 18th anniversary of this wonderful event.  It is an outstanding opportunity to honor educators who are committed to excellence in the education of Hispanics,” said Armando R. Rodriguez, Ed.D., chair of the Hispanic Advisory Board.

In addition, the Hispanic Advisory Board recognized David Lawrence, Jr., former editor and publisher of the Miami Herald, founding Chair of the Children’s Trust, and President of the Early Childhood Initiative Foundation for his years of service and dedication as an agent of change in the educational arena.
