NSU Epidemiologist Talks About Heroin Overdoses in Broward
According to the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, there were 1,642 opioid overdose poisoning cases in Broward County hospitals in 2017. The unfortunate truth is that out of 1,642 cases, 85 percent were overdoses on heroin.
Jim Hall, an epidemiologist at NSU’s Center for Applied Research on Substance Use and Health Disparities (NSU-ARSH), spoke with WLRN about the statistics of these cases and the importance of acting quickly if you or someone you know is overdosing. Hall also talks about what happens to patients after they are discharged from the hospital, with most receiving no follow-up treatment.
