NSU Oceanographic Expert Featured in Multiple Media Reports About Shark Encounter

FORT LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, FL – Recently an incident occurred in the Intracoastal Waterway where a swimmer had an encounter with what is believed to be a bull shark.

TheSOS Shark Centre encounter came as a surprise not only the swimmer, but to many residents of South Florida who didn’t realize sharks are found in the Intracoastal Waterway. Multiple media outlets followed this story, and NSU research associate and shark expert Dr. Derek Buckholder was featured in several reports. Burkholder works with NSU’s Guy Harvey Researcher Institute and the Save our Seas Shark Centre.

Burkholder’s  primary research interests are predator-prey behavioral interactions and their impact on both prey populations and the structure of marine communities. His research examines shark community dynamics, foraging patterns and habitat use/movements of shark communities in South Florida and Australia.
