NSU MD Celebrates Preliminary Accreditation and Honors Medical Education Leaders

NSU MD Dean Johannes Vieweg, M.D., FACS, presents the inaugural Darrell Kirch Award for Excellence in Medical Education to Paula S. Wales, Ed.D.

NSU MD Dean Johannes Vieweg, M.D., FACS, presents the inaugural Darrell Kirch Award for Excellence in Medical Education to Paula S. Wales, Ed.D.

On October 10, 2018, the NSU Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine (NSU MD) celebrated the one-year anniversary of receiving preliminary accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). Since that time, NSU MD welcomed a class of 53 change-agents who will become future physician leaders, the college’s team of expert faculty and administrators has grown significantly, and the community has stepped up to provide significant philanthropic support, including a gift to rename the college in honor of Dr. Kiran C. Patel.

To celebrate this milestone, NSU MD Dean Johannes Vieweg, M.D., FACS, hosted a celebration with the college’s faculty and staff. There, he announced the creation of the Darrell Kirch Award for Excellence in Medical Education, which is named in honor Darrell Kirch, M.D., the retiring president and CEO of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), for his lifelong commitment to the field of medical education. A presentation will be made annually to a faculty member who exemplifies NSU MD’s commitment to innovation in medical education. The inaugural recipient was Paula S. Wales, Ed.D., executive associate dean for academic and student affairs and professor, medical education, who plays a leading role in the college’s accreditation process.

When informed of the newly-established award, Dr. Kirch responded, “I am both touched and honored that you named this award after me. And I am delighted to know that Paula is the inaugural recipient. She is richly deserving of this recognition! Once again, please know that I deeply appreciate the warm hospitality shown by you on my visit to NSU earlier this year.”

In July, Dr. Kirch delivered a keynote address at the joint NSU D.O./M.D. White Coat Ceremony and spent time getting to know the NSU MD charter class.
