NSU Institute for Child Health Policy Honors Former Miami Dolphins Linebacker

Former Miami Dolphin Linebacker Twan Russell was honored as the 2010 Kate Platt Child Advocate of the Year recipient (second row, middle).

Former Miami Dolphin Linebacker Twan Russell was honored as the 2010 Kate Platt Child Advocate of the Year recipient – an award that is sponsored by NSU’s Institute for Child Health Policy. The annual award, presented to Russell on May 5 at the Ft. Lauderdale Country Club, recognizes individuals whose achievements and career contributions have made a significant difference in Broward County’s maternal and child health policy. The accolade is dedicated to the memory of Kate Platt, a Broward County youth who touched many lives during her short life before dying in a car accident. The award was also given to Corliss Russell, Twan Russell’s late mother, in memoriam.

A Broward County native, Twan Russell was concerned about the high illiteracy rate of inner city youth and the lack of educational reinforcement resources available to them. He and his mother, a former educator, embarked on a journey to eradicate illiteracy among high-risk groups. As a result, they formed the Russell Life Skills and Reading Foundation, Inc.
