Nova Southeastern University Hosts Career Fair for People with Disabilities

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE Fla. — Those with disabilities who are seeking employment will have a variety of companies to choose from at the 4th annual Connections Career Fair at Nova Southeastern University (NSU).

The event on Thursday, October 16 will feature up to 25 companies. This one-of-a-kind job fair caters exclusively to people with disabilities, said Pam Masters, executive director of the Broward Business Leadership Network, which is running the event with NSU, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, United Way of Broward County and Work Force One.

“People with disabilities are extremely reliable, loyal, and dedicated,” Masters said. “If you hire them, the return on your investment will come back many times.”

Some employers at job fair will include Nova Southeastern University, State Farm Insurance, Broward Sheriff’s Office, City of Hollywood, Broward College, Memorial Healthcare System, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, Holy Cross Hospital, Luxury Resorts & Hotels, among others.

It’s estimated that one out of five, or more than 55 million people in the U.S., are disabled, Masters said. And that number is growing. Accommodations for employees with disabilities are surprisingly simple and inexpensive, she said.

The Connections Career Fair will offer a wealth of information for employers as well as job opportunities for people with disabilities.

The event’s keynote speaker is John Kemp, executive director and general counsel for the U.S. Business Leadership Network in Washington D.C. Kemp, who uses four prostheses after losing his arms and legs as a child, is widely respected for his many achievements in the corporate and nonprofit worlds. He inspires others to achieve the impossible through knowledge, experience, vision, humor, and persistence. He has spent 45 years advocating for the disabled. In 2006, he received the Henry B. Betts award, which is regarded as America’s highest honor for disability leadership and service. Kemp is a member of the Horatio Alger Association for Distinguished Americans.

Connections Career Fair will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at NSU’s Carl DeSantis Building, location on its main campus in Ft. Lauderdale-Davie. The actual job fair will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
