NSU Home to Subject Matter Expert Who Can Provide Insight into Odds of Winning Record Powerball Jackpot

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FORT LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – When it comes to the Powerball Lottery, unlike The Hunger Games, the odds are definitely NOT in your favor.

Despite this fact, the jackpot continues to climb to record amounts – up to around $1.3 billion at last count. And people across South Florida and the nation are standing in line eager to plunk down their hard-earned money for a shot at glory.

For media working on related stories, Nova Southeastern University is home to a Subject Matter Expert who can speak about the astronomical odds (you have a better chance of being struck by a meteor in the next 12 months than winning the Powerball) and other aspects to games of chance and gambling.

Dr. Jason Gershman is the interim chairman of NSU’s Department of Mathematics and is an associate professor of Mathematics and Statistics in NSU’s Halmos College of Natural Sciences and OceanographyDr. Gershman received his Ph.D. in statistics from Rice University in 2007, and was named NSU’s Teacher of the Year for the 2014-15 school year.  His areas of research include biostatistics, applied probability, statistics in sports, and statistical education, for which he has presented at national conferences and been published in academic journals.

Dr. Gershman has extensive experience working with the media – he knows what you need for a good story and can deliver for you every time. He has been featured by numerous media outlets in their stories, including, but not limited to: The Sun-Sentinel; The Washington Post; The Vancouver Sun; and the Montreal Gazette. He is also well versed in video/broadcast media interviews as well, being featured by MSNBC.com and Forbes.com as well as on radio for WCMT 1410 AM (Martin, TN), WYLK 94.7 FM (New Orleans, LA), KHXT 107.9 FM (Lafayette, LA), and television for WSVN Fox 7 (Miami, FL), WTVJ NBC 6 (Miami, FL), and WPLG ABC 10 (Miami, FL.)

Dr. Gershman is on NSU’s Fort Lauderdale-Davie campus and is available for interviews (in person and via telephone.)
