NSU is collaborating with community and governmental organizations in Palm Beach County to test the hurricane preparedness of elderly residents and to determine areas that need improvement.

The purpose of this study is to test the theoretical model of hurricane preparedness constructed by Moon (2010) among a group of vulnerable elderly residents living in a high risk geographical area by measuring their hurricane risk perception, perceived control over hurricane outcomes, intentions to carry out hurricane preparedness and actual hurricane preparedness. These measures will provide insight as to the status of these individuals and possible areas for intervention to improve hurricane preparedness.

The inter-disciplinary study is being conducted by Deirdre Krause, Ph.D., ARNP, FNP-BC, associate professor of nursing at NSU’s Palm Beach Campus; Terry Ogilby, Ph.D., M.S.N., M.P.H., RN, associate professor of nursing at NSU’s Fort Myers Campus; and Jo Ann Kleier, Ph.D., Ed.D., ARNP, ACNP-BC, professor director of research at NSU’s College of Nursing; in collaboration with Kristi Messer, M.P.H., M.S.W., director of disaster and emergency preparedness at NSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Participating organizations include The Delray Beach Alliance, Alliance of Delray Residential Associations, Inc., Shirley & Barton Weisman Delray Community Center – Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services Community Center, Delray Medical Center, Palm Beach County Emergency Operations Center, Healthcare & Elder Services and Kings Point.
