NSU Alumni Spotlight: James Burrell, Ph.D.

James Burrell, Ph.D. (Ed.S. ’06, Ph.D. ’13), is deputy assistant director at the Federal Bureau of Investigation. His responsibilities include executive leadership of agency-wide research, development, and advancement of applied technologies for investigative and intelligence operations. In this position, he has led global FBI cyber investigative and intelligence operations, including the implementation of a multiyear, enterprise-level strategy to enhance the bureau’s ability to counter current and emerging cyber threats impacting the United States. He has served as the lead investigator for complex high-profile criminal and national security investigations and managed high-risk threat assessments and protective security operations for senior government officials. His diplomatic and national-level policy experience includes serving as a delegate to multinational organizations and interagency governmental policy committees.

In addition to his professional achievements with the FBI, Burrell continues to teach and advise research for graduate-level computer science and engineering
students at public and private universities.

“NSU provided me with a critical, research-based education that improved my ability to make strategic assessments and decisions,” he said. “I have also been able to apply the knowledge and skills I developed at NSU to introduce innovative instructional strategies into the academic community.”
