Nova Southeastern University’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education Reading Education Programs Ranked Second by the Florida Department of Education

LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – At the end of 2015, Florida Education Commissioner Pam Stewart released an annual report on teacher preparation programs in the state.  When the final tally was made, Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Abraham S. Fischler College of Education’s Reading Education programs summative rating scores and subscores ranked second in approved teacher preparation programs in the state of Florida. Additionally, Nova Southeastern University’s Elementary Education/ESOL ranked thirteen in the state of Florida for the Analysis of Program Performance Measures and Scores Report.

“We at NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education are thrilled that our Reading Education programs were the second-ranked approved teacher preparation programs in Florida,” said Lynne Schrum, Ph.D., dean of the Abraham S. Fischler College of Education. “This recognition acknowledges the hard work our faculty members put into their courses and practicum experiences and reflects NSU’s core values of academic excellence with student centered programs,”

Included for the first time in the statutorily required report are rankings based on the performance standards for Florida’s teacher preparation programs in elementary education, English/reading education and mathematics education. These rankings are based on the success of the students who graduated from these programs.

“For Florida’s students to have the learning opportunities they deserve, Florida-trained educators must have the preparation they need. This report is a major milestone for Florida, placing us again in the very top tier of states in the country in making commitments to college and career readiness for every student. I commend our teacher preparation programs for their collaboration on this great effort,” said Education Commission Pam Stewart.

The report of all programs is designed to support recognition, continuous improvement, transparency and accountability for teacher preparation programs in Florida.  Prospective educators may use the report to make decisions about the best teacher preparation program for them, and teacher preparation leaders may use the report to identify areas for improvement, as well as areas of best practice.

NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), www.ncate.org. This accreditation covers initial teacher preparation programs and advanced educator preparation programs at all university locations and online. NSU Abraham S. Fischler College of Education are teachers and administrators across the country, including more than 238 superintendents and 38 college/university presidents who obtained an Ed.D. degree from the college.
