Nova Southeastern University Subject Matter Expert on President Obama’s State of the Union Address
FT LAUDERDALE, Fla.– January, 28, 2014 –
Later this evening, President Obama will address the nation during his State of the Union address. Not lost on this presidency, is the knowledge that a single speech can be very powerful in recapturing a political agenda.
“As always, the State of the Union address is a big deal for the president,” says Nova Southeastern University (NSU) Professor Charles Zelden, Ph.D. “He has to sell his legislative agenda to the nation or he won’t get anything out of Congress.”
According to Zelden, a powerful State of the Union address can also change the media narrative and reenergize the nation. “Without clear public support,” says Zelden, “President Obama’s legislative agenda is dead on arrival. The President also needs to defend Obama-Care to get the American public to view it as basically a success (with problems) rather than a failure (with a few successes).”

About Charles L. Zelden, Ph.D: Professor of History, Law and Politics at NSU’s Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences.
