Nova Southeastern University Salutes School Counselors During National School Counseling Week (Feb. 3-7, 2014)

FORT LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. –February 3, 2014 –

They are some of the most important, yet unheralded, employees a school district has – school counselors. These dedicated individuals work with students on a daily basis and can have a tremendous impact in helping students realize success both in the classroom and in life.

For many years, Nova Southeastern University (NSU) has worked closely with Broward County Public Schools and other school districts to provide professional development, training, research, and support for school counselors, teachers and other professional educators. That’s why NSU joins others across the nation in recognizing National School Counseling Week (Feb. 3-7, 2014.)

“In keeping with its core values and Carnegie Foundation classification for community engagement/high research, NSU works with community partners, including counselors and other school personnel,” said Karen Grosby, Ed. D., dean of NSU’s Center for Psychological Studies (CPS.) “NSU offers services to schools and collaborates on research to improve student outcomes, an integral part of program quality improvement. To provide a full and rich educational experience, schools must have comprehensive counseling programs – school counselors are a very important part of a child’s education.”

Effective school counselors are actively engaged in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents. They work in a partnership with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today’s world by focusing on positive ways to enhance students’ social/personal, educational and career development. They work collaboratively with teachers and other educators to ensure students can realize their potential and achieve healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations. Professional school counselors are certified, experienced educators with a master’s degree in school counseling. The combination of their training and experience makes them an integral part of the total educational program.
