Nova Southeastern University Home to Subject Matter Expert to Help Families Explain Acts of Terrorism to Children

FORT LAUDERDALE/DAVIE, Fla. – It’s happened again – another act of senseless violence against innocent victims. This time, the tragedy occurred in Belgium – and it is garnering hours and hours of media coverage as experts try to determine what happened, why it happened and who is responsible.

With all that media coverage – TV, radio and Internet – one thing is sure: young adults and children are going to see images and hear stories about something they may not be able to fully comprehend. While some families may simply turn off the TV or computer, others may be looking for ways to help explain to their children what happened – help them understand what transpired.

To that end, Nova Southeastern University (NSU) is home to a Subject Matter Expert who can help – Ralph Eugene “Gene” Cash, Ph.D. His brief biographical information follows:

Ralph Eugene “Gene” Cash, Ph.D.

Ralph Eugene (Gene) Cash, Ph.D., is a professor in NSU’s College of Psychology. He’s a Florida licensed and board certified psychologist (ABPP) and a Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP). After graduating from the University of Tennessee with high honors and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa, he received a full fellowship to attend graduate school at New York University (NYU). He earned both his master’s degree and Ph.D. in school psychology from NYU after serving two years in the U.S. Army, a one year externship at Bellevue Psychiatric Hospita, and a year’s internship as well as a subsequent year of supervised experience in a community mental health center and parochial schools in Brooklyn. 

Dr. Cash moved to Florida in 1976, where he worked for the School District of Broward County as a school psychologist for three years and as an administrator for one year. He was in private practice full-time from 1980 – 2003, and now handles the administration of that practice, emphasizing comprehensive psycho-educational and child custody evaluations as well as other educationally-related forensic work. As a professor at NSU’s College of Psychology, Dr. Cash was named “Specialist Professor of the Year” two consecutive years. He is also the director of the NSU school-related Psychological Assessments and Clinical Interventions (SPACI) clinic.

Dr. Cash is a past president, Public Policy and Professional Relations Committee chair, Private Practice chair, and member of the Ethics Committee of the Florida Association of School Psychologists (FASP) and has served on the FASP Executive Board for more than 30 years. He is co-founder, past president and current treasurer of the FASP Children’s Services Fund, Inc., FASP’s charity arm; a member of the Florida Suicide Prevention Coordinating Council; a past president of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP); a former Florida representative to the NASP Delegate Assembly; and a former Southeast Regional Delegate Representative to the NASP Executive Council. Gene is a two-time recipient of the NASP Government and Professional Relations Committee Certificate of Appreciation for his advocacy work and is one of the few recipients of FASP’s Willard Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award.
