Soul of the People Great Depression Exhibition at the Alvin Sherman Library Hosts Free Events in April and May

A new exhibition: Soul of the People: Writing Florida’s Story is now open at Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center in the Second Floor Gallery, and will run through May 10.

As a part of the exhibition, the Alvin Sherman Library is sponsoring a series of programs in conjunction with “Soul of a People: Writing America’s Story,” a new television documentary about the Federal Writers’ Project (FWP) to be broadcast on the Smithsonian Channel HD. Many writers from the project later became famous, among them Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, Studs Terkel and Eudora Welty.


Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale’s Presents an Exhibition of Paintings, Sculptures, and Photographs from the Collections of Gordon Locksley + George T. Shea and Francie Bishop Good + David Horvitz

A great love of collecting the art of our time is shown in the private holdings of Gordon Locksley + George T. Shea and Francie Bishop Good + David Horvitz.All four individuals are tireless collectors passionately engaged in the contemporary art scene. The Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale has brought together over one hundred selected works from these two collections for this exhibition, With You I Want to Live, the title taken from a neon wall sculpture by Tracey Emin in the Locksley collection. The exhibition, which will dominate 17,000 square feet of the Museum’s special exhibition galleries, opens to the public on April 18, 2009.


Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale to Hold April 18th Student Scholarship Competition for Creative Summer Art Academy

The Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, a division of Nova Southeastern University, is encouraging budding artists to attend its 2009 Creative Summer Art Academy (CSAA) by holding a merit scholarship competition. The competition, open to students entering grades 1-12 and interested in the Creative Summer Art Academy, will take place on Saturday, April 18 from 9 a.m.-noon at the Museum’s Studio School Annex.


NSU Fraternity Holding Powerlifting Competition to Raise Money for MS Society

The Kappa Sigma fraternity at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) will host a philanthropic powerlifting competition on Saturday, March 28. The “Kappa Sigma Strongman” will consist of events testing the strength and endurance of its competitors while raising funds and awareness for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

NSU’s Kappa Sigma chapter has been impacted by MS as two members of the fraternity have mothers with the disease.


Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale’s April 16th FREE Third Thursday Event: Jazz guitarist Peter Betan

The Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, a division of Nova Southeastern University, presents a FREE jazz and world music performance by musician Peter Betan, a critically-acclaimed acoustic guitarist from Miami. Betan will perform Thursday, April 16, 2009 at 6 pm as part of the Museum of Art’s Third Thursday event celebration.


Colin Powell’s Former Chief of Staff to Speak at NSU Law Center

Ret. Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson, who served as chief of staff for former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, will speak at Nova Southeastern University’s Shepard Broad Law Center on March 26 at 3 p.m. The free public presentation will address how recent foreign policy changes affect the United States’ national security.

Wilkerson, who served as Powell’s chief of staff from 2002-05, has been critical of the Bush administration since leaving the State Department.


NSU’s Fischler School Partners With Miami HEAT to Give Away More than $15,000 in Scholarships

The Fischler School of Education and Human Services of Nova Southeastern University (NSU) will hand out more than $15,000 in scholarships to the winners of the annual Miami HEAT / Fischler School of NSU essay contest, which runs now until Wednesday, March 25.

To enter the 2009 contest, submit a 250-word or fewer essay on the theme: “Tell us why you or someone you know would cause an effect and change the world with a college degree.”


Meet & Mingle with 24 Renowned Authors at NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library During LitLIVE! – Sat. March 21

LitLIVE!, part of the 21st edition of Literary Feast, will bring 24 acclaimed authors to Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Alvin Sherman Library, Research and Information Technology Center on Saturday, March 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Authors will meet thousands of book lovers throughout the day at panel discussions, lectures, book sales and signings at the Alvin Sherman Library, 3301 College Ave. in Davie. The event is free and open to the public.


PETA Executive to Speak at NSU Law Center

Dan Mathews, senior vice president of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), will speak at Nova Southeastern University’s Shepard Broad Law Center on Thursday, April 2, from 6 to 7 p.m. Matthews will hold a signing of his book, Committed: A Rabble-Rouser’s Memoir, at a reception following the speech. The event is free and open to the public.


Edward Lieblein to Retire After Serving 16 Years as Dean of Nova Southeastern University’s Computer Science School

Edward Lieblein, Ph.D., will retire in May 2009 after serving as dean of the Graduate School of Computer and Information Sciences (GSCIS) at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) in Fort Lauderdale for 16 years. A national search for his successor is being conducted.

Lieblein has had more than 50 years of experience as an executive and administrator in the public and private sectors. Throughout this time, he has also served as a professor and administrator in academia. Lieblein is an internationally recognized authority in the fields of computer science and information systems.


NSU and American Academy of Pediatrics release guide to help Children Cope with a Recession

Nova Southeastern University and the American Academy of Pediatrics released a guide Monday that offers parents and caregivers tips to help children cope with a recession.

“Raising children can be very difficult when you have concerns about not having enough money to take care of your family,” said Deborah Mulligan, M.D., director of NSU’s Institute for Child Health Policy and member of the AAP’s executive council on media and communications.


Nova Southeastern University to Hold Campus-Wide Open House

Nova Southeastern University (NSU) will hold a campus-wide open house for prospective students on March 27-28. The open house will be held in the Don Taft University Center located on NSU’s main campus (3301 College Ave. in Davie).

Prospective students will have an opportunity to meet faculty, admissions advisors and current students and get information on the more than 140 bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree programs offered by NSU.
