Law Center’s Class of 2010 Completes 21,000 Hours of Pro Bono Legal Work

The Class of 2010 at NSU’s Shepard Broad Law Center volunteered more than 21,000 hours of pro bono legal work during law school as part of the school’s Pro Bono Honor Program.  To qualify for the Pro Bono Honor Program, students had to volunteer a minimum of 50 hours during law school.  However, many of the 92 students from the class of 2010 that qualified for the program volunteered at least 125 hours, with a number of them exceeding 300 hours of service.

The 21,000 volunteer hours is the equivalent of over 420 work weeks (at 50 hours per week) or almost 8.5 years of service (at 50 work weeks per year).  At a modest rate of $125 per hour, this effort saved clients over $2.5 million.

Among the agencies served were Legal Aid Service of Broward County, Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida, The Offices of the Public Defender and the State Attorney in Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade Counties, Guardian Ad Litem, NSU’s Everglades Law Center, the Office of the Florida Attorney General, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
