June Health Tip: Colorectal Cancer is a Killer

In light of all the controversy regarding health care reform, one thing seems certain. If we as individuals do not take more responsibility in addressing our own health care needs, we as a nation, will never succeed in improving the health care system.  A major focus we all need to address is prevention.

Often on the back burner of our diagnostic screening is colorectal cancer, the second leading cancer killer in the United States.  In 2006,* 139,127 people were diagnosed with colorectal cancer, and 53,196 people died from it. We as a nation can  help  prevent colorectal cancer by building partnerships, encouraging screening, supporting education and training, and conducting surveillance and research.

Death from this devastating disease can be prevented by early detection. For this month’s health hint we are directing you to the Center for Disease Control web site which has a page devoted to this subject. I think you will find the site extremely informative and comprehensive.
