Hurdler to Compete at NCAA National Championships

Carlyle Thompson of NSU’s men’s track and field team was accepted to compete in the 2010 NCAA National Championships being held May 27-29 at Irwin Belk Track Complex in Charlotte, N.C.

Thompson, who will be racing in the 400-meter hurdles, is the first-ever NSU track and field athlete from either the men’s or women’s team to be accepted into the NCAA National Championships.

“I am extremely excited for Carlyle to make the 400-meter hurdles field,” said head coach Bryan Hagopian. “This is a big step for the program. I think he has an outside shot at finishing in the Top-3 in the nation.”

“This season pretty much went well for me,” said Thompson. “Everything came together when it was supposed to. I am quite happy I qualified for nationals and will try to do my best.”

Thompson enters the meet with the seventh-fastest time in the nation in the 400-meter hurdles. He clocked 52.30 at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational on Apr. 10, meeting the NCAA provisional qualifying time and the breaking NSU’s school record. Leford Green from Johnson C. Smith has the top time entering the meet with a 49.46 ran at the Georgia Tech Invitational on May 14.

Thompson has only raced in the 400-meter hurdles twice this season. His first time was at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational. The second time came at the 101st Drake Relays where he was in a heat with some of the top NCAA Division I 400-meter hurdlers. Thompson finished seventh in his eight-hurdler heat and was 16th overall with a time of 52.80.

The prelims of the 400-meter hurdles are scheduled for May 27 at 8:25 p.m. The 400-meter hurdle finals will take place at 8:10 p.m. on May 29. Fans can follow the meet via Live Results or a webcast by host Johnson C. Smith: Live Results Webcast
