Huizenga College of Business Visiting Professor Speaks at Egyptian Conference on Poverty and Food Waste

Guenola Nonet, Ph.D., visiting professor and scholar in residence, at the H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship, recently presented at a research conference in Cairo, Egypt, on the topic of ‘Food Poverty and Food Waste Management.”
Nonet’s presentation was focused on the food that U.S. and European citizens waste while a large number of people suffer from limited access to food and food poverty. In fact, her research showed that between 30 to 40% of the food produced worldwide annually is simply wasted.
“This was a shocking presentation to some in the audience because food poverty in Africa or other developing countries is usually the topic—not the U.S. or Europe,” explained Nonet. “Many feel compelled to do something about this situation.”
She is continuing her research, collaborating with Ryan Atkins, professor, supply chain management, and Kimberly Deranek, professor, operations and systems management.
Co-hosted by the American University of Cairo and the United Nations Principles for Responsible Management Regional Group (MENA), the Cairo conference was the second PRME conference held to focus on research.
