HPERS 2013 Call for Abstracts & Attendees

Nova Southeastern University’s Institute for Educational Research in the Health Professions  Division is pleased to announce the call for abstracts and proposals for our 5th educational research conference. The Health Professions Educational Research Symposium (HPERS) is scheduled for January 26, 2013 at NSU’s Health Professions Division.

The theme for this year’s conference is “Physiological, Cognitive, and Social Approaches to Teaching and Learning: What’s the Evidence?” The theme reminds us of the importance of seeking evidence regarding effective teaching strategies, assessment of student learning outcomes, and the development of best teaching practices based on available evidence. Faculty members in all disciplines ask similar questions: Is my teaching effective? How do I measure learning?What variables impact student learning? How can I facilitate learning in both the classroom and online environments? What methods increase student engagement or improve student outcomes?

We invite faculty, administrators, clinical educators, and educational researchers to submit high quality abstracts for HPERS 2013 related to our theme of physiological, cognitive, and social approaches to teaching and learning. Abstracts can reflect classroom research, comprehensive literature reviews, course/program development and evaluation, innovative educational approaches, or the evaluation of student learning outcomes. There are four types of presentations available for submission:

Poster—Summarizing educational research or innovative classroom strategies

30 Min Platform Presentation—Describing educational research or innovative classroom strategies

60 Min Workshop—Interactive session designed to enhance skills related to teaching effectiveness

Authors’ Forum—Showcase for faculty with published textbooks or scholarly books

We seek high quality abstracts related to this year’s theme that will educate attendees, provoke discussion, and facilitate further research and/or collaboration.  Abstracts can be submitted by going to the HPERS website http://www.nova.edu/hpers and clicking on the link for Abstract Submission. The deadline is Nov. 15. All abstracts receive a peer-reviewed evaluation; presenters will be notified by November 26. All presenters and attendees must register for HPERS 2013. Convenient online registration is available through our website under the Registration link.

All faculty members are encouraged to participate in this engaging symposium. The opening keynote speaker is Todd Zakrajsek, Ph.D., presenting on “Critical Challenges in Teaching and Learning: Why Teaching Students How to Learn is Essential.” The closing speaker is Mary Blackinton PT, Ed.D., discussing psychomotor instruction in her presentation, “You can’t learn to dance sitting down: Applying the science of motor learning to promote psychomotor skill development in health professions education.”

HPERS provides a dynamic and interactive environment sure to heighten your excitement about educational research and scholarship. Conference registration includes a continental breakfast, lunch, and wine/cheese reception. The cost of the one-day seminar, which includes breakfast, lunch, and wine/cheese reception, is $75 for NSU faculty; $40 for NSU Students; $125 for non-NSU faculty.
