Halmos Hosts Second Marine Biology Early Immersion
On Friday, April 13, Halmos College Department of Marine and Environmental Science hosted the second marine biology Early Immersion event. Held at the Oceanographic Campus (OC), students learned about the various aspects of a career in marine biology. During their time at the OC students were taught how to prepare octocoral spicules and use a microscope to identify the genus with Halmos faculty member Charles Messing, Ph.D. The students then met current graduate students and who were preparing an experiment of hydrocarbons and its effect on corals. On completion of this research project, the students joined Halmos faculty member Amy Hirons, Ph.D. in exploring the animals, sediment, and plants found in the waters around the OC.
The Early Immersion Program gives undergraduate students the opportunity to learn about professions through hands on activities and face to face conversations. The Halmos College Marine Biology Early Immersion program is held twice a year.
