Halmos Faculty Member Presents Biofuel Research at International Conference

This June, Halmosbiofuel Chemistry Faculty Member Reza Razeghifard, Ph.D. presented his research on algal biofuel at the 7th International Conference on Algal Biomass, Biofuels and Bioproducts. The goal of this research is to understand the response of microalgae to stress conditions that promote the accumulation of lipids and starch. Two different microalgae were studied in laboratories by measuring their photosynthetic capacities in nitrogen-depleted growth media. Several chemical instrumentations and techniques were used to analyze the biomass composition of these algae before and after exposure to the nitrogen stress.

Held in Miami, Florida, the conference was organized by Elsevier Ltd and sponsored by U.S. Department of Energy Bioenergy Technologies Office. The conference covered all areas of emerging technologies in all areas of algal research, including microalgae, macroalgae, and cyanobacteria: biology, biomass production, cultivation, harvesting, extraction, biorefinery, feedstock conversion into fuels, bioproducts, and econometrics and sustainability analyses. The 8th conference will be held in Seattle, Washington.
