Halmos College Researchers Present at Oil Dispersant Workshop

Dispersant1

This past August, Researcher Scientist Abigail Renegar, Ph.D. and doctoral candidate Nicholas Turner were invited to attend the Dispersant Testing Workshop, organized by ExxonMobil, at the National Oil Spill Response Test Facility (Ohmsett) in Leonardo, New Jersey. There Renegar presented project updates and results from the ongoing projects in the Halmos College’s Marine Toxicology Lab. While there, they observed how dispersants are tested on simulated oil spills in the wave tank.

Funded by Clean Caribbean & Americas and the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative the Marine Toxicology Lab’s project includes a suite of experiments investigating impacts of hydrocarbons on shallow water corals. The initial focus in on development of a toxicity testing protocol for corals, based on 48-hour constant exposures with a single hydrocarbon. The results of this work will guide further experimentation phases utilizing additional single hydrocarbons and, ultimately, water accommodated fractions of oilhttps://www.researchgate.net/project/Quantifying-Hydrocarbon-Toxicity-to-Shallow-water-Corals-Improving-NEBA-for-Dispersant-Decision-Making
