Global Art Celebration Showcases Fischler School & Alumni Talent
Interdisciplinary Arts Program graduate Melissa Axel and musician Kailin Yong performed together at the Global Celebration of the Arts.
Nathan Markham, a graduate student in the Interdisciplinary Arts Program, displayed his artwork.
NSU’s Alumni Association and the Fischler School of Education and Human Services’ Interdisciplinary Arts Program recently presented “A Global Celebration of the Arts” featuring a free evening of original music, visual art, and cultural harmony.
Performers included:
- Melissa Axel: Interdisciplinary Arts Program graduate and recording artist Melissa Axel (’06) debuted new original music and performed songs from her spring 2009 CD Transition. Centered on themes of love, humanity, and metamorphosis, Axel’s music has been described as “heartbreak, hope, and transformation distilled through gorgeous piano and a fearlessly intimate vocal.” Prior to earning her master’s at NSU, Axel studied at Boston’s renowned Berklee College of Music. Axel was also awarded a scholarship to WOMAD Summer School (World of Music and Dance, founded in 1980 by Peter Gabriel) in the UK, where she studied songwriting and African music. Her drive to create personal yet universal songs is inspired by travels in Europe, Polynesia, and the U.S.
- Kailin Yong: International fiddler Kailin Yong, performed with Axel and also presented compositions rooted in his own exploration of world cultures – sounds of the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. The Singapore native is a graduate of the Vienna Academy of Music and recently won an Independent Music Award for his instrumental “Does It Really Matter?” As a musical ambassador and recipient of the Daniel Pearl Memorial Violin, Yong honors diversity and international friendship through artistic collaboration, spreading a message of hope across cultural divides and inspiring a sense of unity and purpose. Yong was accompanied by several local musicians, including NSU Interdisciplinary Arts Program graduate Dessalines Ford (’07), who also presented a solo piano piece.
- Nathan Markham: This event also featured the artwork of NSU Interdisciplinary Arts Program graduate student Nathan Markham. Upon graduating from Savannah College of Art and Design in 1999, he and his wife spent two years backpacking around the world, collecting images, stories, and videos concerning the migration of the King family of Guyana throughout the British Colonies and Dominion. Markham creates paintings and videos from memories of this experience, and he created visual projections specifically for this live performance and exhibited selected artworks based on their connection to the themes explored in the music that was presented.
