Hundreds of budding and expert genealogical adventurers recently attended NSU’s Second Annual Genealogy Fair on Saturday, May 2, at the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center.

The fair was free and open to the public courtesy of its sponsors: the Hagen Family Foundation, Family Tree DNA and Proquest. The fair included research database demonstrations, breakout sessions, and a variety of genealogy-related exhibitors offering individual consultations throughout the day. Nationally recognized experts and keynote speakers included:

  • John Colletta, Ph.D., author of They Came in Ships.
  • Rick Kittles, Ph.D., geneticist for the PBS series African American Lives.
  • Lynn Turner, director of the Hispanic Record’s Family Indexing Project.
  • Matt Kaplan, Ph.D., geneticist for the DNA Shoah Project, and lab manager for Family Tree DNA.

Participants received a free genealogy workbook to help begin and continue their family’s history, as well as lessons on using genealogical databases such as Ancestry Library, Heritage Quest and Family Search.
