Fischler School Co-Hosting International Child and Youth Care Conference
NSU’s Fischler School of Education and Human Services is co-hosting the 2009 International Child and Youth Care Conference from May 26-29 at Embassy Suites Fort Lauderdale, at 1100 SE 17th Street.
This triennial event, entitled “Global Warning,” will focus on children, youth and families in the Child Welfare System, and aims to provide participants with the tools needed to reach and impact this at-risk demographic. Hundreds of participants from around the world will gather to experience more than 120 workshops.
Keynote speakers include:
- David Bennett: “Creating Nurturing Environments for Kids At Risk”
Wednesday, May 27 from 10:45 a.m. to 12 noon
The ‘blueprint’ for developing resilient traits is embedded in caring relationships between adolescents and adults. Bennett is an adolescent health physician with a major interest in developing accessible, responsive health services for young people and their families.
- David Lawrence Jr.: “Building a Movement for All Children”
Thursday, May 28 from 9 to 10 a.m.
Lawrence retired from a distinguished career as reporter, editor and most recently as publisher of the Miami Herald to devote the second chapter of his life to high-quality early childhood development, care and readiness. He was the principal force behind the passage of Florida’s constitutional amendment for free pre-kindergarten availability.
- Andrew Schneider-Muñoz: “See Change in Youth Work: Responding to the Global Youth Crisis”
Friday, May 29 from 9 to 10 a.m.
Schneider-Munoz has traveled the world to understand first-hand the challenges facing youth workers in countries such as Russia, Samoa, Guatemala, Mexico and Chad. Schneider-Munoz is co-editor and author of After-School Around The Globe: Policy, Practices, and Youth Voice which covers innovative youth work around the world.
Workshop topics include: substance abuse; cultural competence/diversity; internet abuse & child pornography; advocacy & public policy; dealing with aggression; child & youth development; teen pregnancy; abuse & neglect; obesity; homelessness; and many others.
