Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences’ Charles Zelden Ph.D., Comments on the Politics Behind Immigration Reform

Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences’ Charles Zelden Ph.D.

Charles Zelden, Ph.D., professor of History and Legal Studies in the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences was asked by the Palm Beach Post to comment on President Obama’s State of the Union address, specifically immigration reform.  According to Zelden many conservative Republicans will vote against the reform because if they don’t they will be inviting challenges by conservative primary opponents in the next election cycle. He added, “So the leadership will say to them, ‘We understand that your “no” vote will help you at primary time, but at the same time if we let it come to the floor and it passes with our input, that will be good for the party at the national level.”
