Faculty Symposium Creates Thought Provoking Discussions

“Where Have You Gone Joe DiMaggio? Are We Allowed to Have Heroes Anymore?”  was the topic for the 4th faculty symposium, hosted by President George L. Hanbury II, Ph.D., on Dec. 1. Speakers Stephen Russo, Ph.D. and Kenneth Johnson, D.O., led the discussion about society’s reaction to and interest in American heroes.

Russo is the director of sports psychology for the NSU Athletic Department and the Sports Medicine Clinic with the College of Osteopathic Medicine, and assistant professor at the Center for Psychological Studies. He has been an applied sports psychologist for more than a decade and has witnessed first-hand hero worship in sports.  Johnson is an associate professor and chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at NSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine.  Growing up in a military family, Johnson saw the rise and fall of heroes as circumstances of the times; coverage of the media, and needs of society changed.

The next symposium, January 5, 2012, will discuss,  “Have We Betrayed Our Children? Sexual Abuse of Children: Duty to Report and Psychological Ramifications of Abuse.” The speakers will be Center for Psychological Studies faculty member Jan Faust, Ph.D.,  and Shepard Broad Law Center faculty member Michael J. Dale, J.D. The venue and time will be the Faculty Shark Club, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m.

RSVP to Lynn Larose at kl698@nova.edu or 954-262-2116 on or before Tuesday, January 3, 2012.
